‘A darkly thought-provoking production’ Olivia Reilly

Absurd Person Singular

University, Tuesday 24th November, 7.45pm

Review by Olivia Reilly

Strong character acting was the hallmark of this production of an Alan Ayckbourn play, the two leads especially succeeding in expressing the fear and anxiety behind their characters’ attempts to keep up appearances and pretend a sense of belonging in the face of the more or less obvious disdain of their wealthier guests. In this they were supported by a sparse set, suggestive at first of the futility of this attempt and then later of the instability of the veneers presented by all the characters. Despite some subtleties perhaps being overlooked, this was a darkly thought-provoking production of a complex play, well-handled and thoughtfully directed.
