Sarah Kane’s plays are not necessarily intended to be enjoyed and this one, which saw us delve into the psyches of an addict, a childless woman, a paedophile and a child rape victim, certainly was not but, ultimately, for all the right reasons. The cast was faced with the daunting task of realising an exceptionally intense and unpleasant piece of theatre that had no stage instructions, however good direction and four strong performances ensured they were successful. The play began in utter darkness as the four characters began their monologues and then, when the lights went up, it was as if we were in the waiting room for some particularly odd insane asylum. Each character’s story interweaved with the others resulting in many extreme four way outbursts which contrasted well with the moments of awkward silence and twitching. This was an impressive and ambitious choice for a Cuppers production but the cast’s experimentation in rehearsals paid off resulting in an exceptionally unpleasant but thoroughly well acted play.
