Great Course Acting – Julius and Cleopatra

Burton Taylor: Tuesday 24th November, 2.15p.m.

Julius and Cleopatra is a dream for a Cupper’s production; within it are the ingredients of humour, love, marriage, disaster and ultimately death. The sheer size of the cast did not dent this excellent performance. The play was a pun on amateur productions, with all sorts of disaster occurring on stage, from the music entering at the wrong time, props breaking, people tripping over and comical names being used. The indicator as to quality was whether the real mistakes were distinguishable from the intended ones; in this play they were not.  Cleopatra played her part exquisitely as the spoilt, sultry Egyptian Queen to whom disaster commonly occurred…including an unexpected ‘popping out’ in one of the final scenes. The leading roles were all strong. One of the less noticeable members of the cast, Zofia Bakowska, who played Librium, was a shining star in an all star cast. Her minor role was played to perfection, such to the extent that I was hoping to see more of her in the play. The costume design and stage set were outstanding. This was a truly ambitious play and one which was pulled off without a hitch. An outstanding performance, one which will not be forgotten amidst the fun of this festival.
