“What it lacked in polish upon occasion it more than made up for in enthusiasm and good humour” Paul Hardwick

Musgrave Ritual

Magdalen, Friday 27th November, 2.15pm,

Review by Paul Hardwick

The Musgrove Ritual was an excellent adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes Radio Play, dramatising the recording of the original radio programme aided by a fantastic set authentically recreating a green room and adjacent recording studio. The action was commanded by the highly theatrical Sherlock Holmes of Vyvyan Almond and his whipping boy Mark Heath. Almond’s portrayal of an actor silently despairing at the ineptitude of those around him was a real highlight of the production as was the significant amount of physical comedy evoked during the reading of the play not to mention Bromide Quinine. Michael Galvin and Kate O’Connor interrupted from time to time, with a brief albeit entertaining romantic sub-plot. Overall the play was highly entertaining exploring about the only unexplored portion of meta-theatrics. What it lacked in polish upon occasion it more than made up for in enthusiasm and good humour.
