The Bald Soprano, a translation of the original French farce, was highly entertaining. A surreal critique of English middle class mores the production was full of life and energy. Edward Bell’s ‘Mr Smith’ was a highlight, inducing many a laugh with some animated physical humour whilst Matthew Perkins’ direction (and much appreciated use of Brio) was commendable, managing the many changes of pace and tone well. Had the surreal elements of the play been introduced more gradually and the actors been quicker on their cues and not rushed other speeches this would have been a very good play. Despite these various niggles the play was inventive, funny and far from dull. The Chief Fireman’s costume was worth the ticket in itself!
