“A crisp, solid ensemble piece.” Ed Cripps

Review by Ed Cripps
To boil Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece down to a half-hour play is ambitious to say the least, but LMH managed to create a crisp, solid ensemble piece. We were treated to two narrators, one coquettish and the other more earthy, and I thought they were particularly good at the start and at the end, when the delivery of their lines was more understated. Redolent of the ‘Wandering Rocks’ chapter of Ulysses, the brief, interlocking vignettes of village life were well rendered and the lighting was superb, colouring the tone of each particular collection of characters. There were nice moments of choreography too, such as the purple-clad ghosts who haunt Captain Cat and the roar in the pub. I wasn’t sure about the song and there were times where the pace slowed, especially in the second half, but this was a slick, well-delivered interpretation of a far from easy text.
