“A curate’s egg of a production.” Ed Cripps

Review by Ed Cripps
Taking a similarly post-modern approach to Cuppers drama as St Catz’ Straight Guys Do Anal, this is a curate’s egg of a production. There are some very funny moments, such as Harpreet Sunny Gohal’s cameo as a banana-eating cleaner and flashes of idiocy from the posh tit (“What is the capital of Africa?”), but the characterisation (stereotypical Old Etonian, angry dean), script (Brokeback Mountain gag, grammar corrections) and plotting (I know, let’s write a play about it!) were rather flat and predictable; the chap who plays the dean is also far too loud. This was not as clever or inventive as St Catz’ treatment of a similar idea and some of the writing is just plain lazy (“I hope this ain’t one of those gay plays” etc), but it takes balls to write ones own material and there were some excellent little touches here and there.

There is a great irony in that you mention grammar corrections and then procede to omit an apostrophe from the line “it takes balls to write ones own material”. Just saying.
