CUPPERS: Hansel and Gretel (Teddy Hall)
“The ambition alone could have commended this piece to the spellbound audience” Max Mulvany

Review by Max Mulvany
Stylistically strong and hilarious throughout, this student-penned production is to be commended for the consistency of entertainment from start to finish. The trio of mine-artist storytellers who control this yarn like rather sinister puppeteers are supported by a hilariously innocent Hansel and Gretel, the babes abandoned in the wood to the sugary charms of the fairytale witch. Convincing costumes, props, original live musical accompaniment (and a startlingly well painted moon) all contributed to an atmosphere of professionalism, but never stifled the free forming fun of the subversive rhyming couplets. Although not a fully polished production quite yet, the ambition alone could have commended this piece to the spellbound audience. And any production that can squeeze cannibalism, child neglect and incest into a children’s fairytale and keep the audience laughing throughout deserves to do very well.
