“The spirit of Cuppers…two large men quick-changing into lycra to perform a vigorous dance to ‘All the single ladies’” Paul Hardwick

Review by Paul Hardwick

The spirit of Cuppers is endless enthusiasm for wont of experience, good humour in the face of adversity and two large men quick-changing into lycra to perform a vigorous dance to ‘All the single ladies’. Teachers had all of this and more besides. The play is set in Whitewall High School; those who have seen ‘Waterloo Road’ will not be surprised by the plot. Yet to look for high drama in this production misses the wonderful experience of seeing three novice actors portray fifteen diverse characters successfully with little more than a prop each and bravado. A lot of bravado. One might argue that lighting cues backfired, quick-changes saw shirts donned back-to-front and cast members collided loudly in protracted pitch black scene changes. But this overlooks the charm of such a charismatic, unpretentious performance and one of the most entertaining productions that I have seen for a very long time.
