“…captures the sadness, irreverence and compassion of childhood with carefully naive performances” Ed Cripps

Tusk Tusk
Worcester, Wednesday 25th November, 5:05pm

Despite some wonderful programmes and flyers, there was sadly no audience other than the judges for this performance, which rather changed the mood compared to the previous three. However, the three actors coped well and capture the sadness, irreverence and compassion of childhood with carefully naive performances. The set was expertly arranged (it must have taken hours to clean up) and there were some touching moments, particularly in the ...

“A crisp, solid ensemble piece.” Ed Cripps

Under Milk Wood
LMH, Wednesday 25th November, 2:50pm
Review by Ed Cripps
To boil Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece down to a half-hour play is ambitious to say the least, but LMH managed to create a crisp, solid ensemble piece. We were treated to two narrators, one coquettish and the other more earthy, and I thought they were particularly good at the start and at the end, when the delivery of their lines was more understated. Redolent of the ‘Wandering Rocks’ chapter of Ulysses, the brief, interlocking ...

“Original, deceptively sharp and occasionally brilliant.” Ed Cripps

Straight Guys Do Anal
St Catz, Wednesday 25th November, 2:05pm
Review by Ed Cripps
This post-modern take on rehearsals for Cuppers was original, deceptively sharp and occasionally brilliant. The first five minutes were wonderful and, had the rest of play continued in the same vein, this would be exceptional. Joe Murphy is particularly impressive as the director, by turns nervy and smug, sincere and disarmingly rude, but always likeable. Like Peter de Lane in Rob Brydon’s Directors Commentary, the director figure becomes an inherent ...

Cleansed
St Annes, Wednesday 25th November, 12.30 p.m.
Review by Robert Williams
Cleansed is not an easy play to stage: arms need to be amputated, tongues get cut out. But St. Anne’s entry did a fair job of dealing with most of these more thorny issues in ways that showed a sound creative approach. Red ribbons, tissue paper and even one of those roll up penny ...

‘superb, a must-see’ Olivia Reilly

Top Girls
St Johns, Tuesday 24th November, 9.15pm
Review by Olivia Reilly

This is a compelling production, full of tension, complexity, and thought-provokingly intense. The standard of acting was superb throughout from a convincing assumption of early adolescence in the character of Kit to the nuanced realisation of family dynamic and complex relationships between sisters, Joyce and Marlene, and their daughter/niece. This latter role was undertaken with assurance by Meriel Cunningham, who succeeded in reconciling both sweetness and suppressed violence in the central character of Angie. ...

“…wonderfully witty and physical production.” Robert Holtom

The Lover
Oriel, 24th November, 4.30pm,
Review by Robert Holtom

Mundane domesticity rivalled subversive sexual goings-on in this wonderfully witty and physical production. This fantastic ensemble piece saw five actors take on various roles including a cuckolded husband, cheating wife and adventurous lover. However, each character was realised by more than one actor ensuring the action of the play was continually shifting around the auditorium, and this effect was heightened by an inspired use of stage lighting, lamps and torches. The acting was of ...
