Superwoman
Wadham, Friday 27th November, 3.45pm,
Review by Paul Hardwick
Ella Evans must be commended not only for chancing her arm at writing, directing and starring in Superwoman but in doing it so very well. The play was little more than a stream of consciousness centred about the protagonist’s reflection and reflections at seeing a beautiful woman pass in the street. Evans, surrounded by a trio chorus, accompanied a self-recording of her monologue with an array of actions and line echos. Not only did this add depth ...

A Brief History of Time…and Other Muses
Regents Park, Friday 28th November 2009, 8:30pm
Review by Max Mulvany
Considering the writer and director of this sprawling epic had the entire history of the whole world ever ever to muse over this was a surprisingly laugh-free event. The large ensemble cast could not be blamed for dashing their sometimes witty lines when they were only able to maintain a character for roughly five seconds before the next De Lorian drag race into something completely unrelated. Most bemusing ...

Citizenship
Keble College, Friday 28th November 2009, 7:45pm
Review by Max Mulvany
A long production that to its credit retained the audience’s attention span throughout. It retained it however at a consistently average level, so that despite various life-changing issues the characters had a look in their eyes of defeatism from start to finish. The play deals with the sexual identity of its protagonist Tom, a tracksuit-wearing weed-smoking ordinary guy. He was worthy of praise for setting up action around ...

Hansel and Gretel
Teddy Hall, Friday 28th November, 7pm
Review by Max Mulvany
Stylistically strong and hilarious throughout, this student-penned production is to be commended for the consistency of entertainment from start to finish. The trio of mine-artist storytellers who control this yarn like rather sinister puppeteers are supported by a hilariously innocent Hansel and Gretel, the babes abandoned in the wood to the sugary charms of the fairytale witch. Convincing costumes, props, original live musical accompaniment (and ...

Musgrave Ritual
Magdalen, Friday 27th November, 2.15pm,
Review by Paul Hardwick
The Musgrove Ritual was an excellent adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes Radio Play, dramatising the recording of the original radio programme aided by a fantastic set authentically recreating a green room and adjacent recording studio. The action was commanded by the highly theatrical Sherlock Holmes of Vyvyan Almond and his whipping boy Mark Heath. Almond’s portrayal of an actor silently despairing ...
