The Mystery at Twickenham Vicarage
New College Thursday 26th November 8:30pm
Review by Charlotte Mulliner
This play was like Agatha Christie on speed, with a cast of colourful caricatures. When the ‘Priapic’ Jeffery is shot, Inspector Dexter is sent in to interrogate the suspects: his wife, the vicar, and the vicar’s wife. A story of swingers and sordid encounters with various items of furniture unfolds, with a dash of theological questioning thrown in for good measure. The cast all handled their highly ...

Rompalottalus
Balliol Thursday 26th November 7.45pm
Review by Charlotte Mulliner
Written in a single night by student Scott Carless, Rompalottalus was a perfect choice for Cuppers and a classicist’s wet dream. A fast-paced and farcical parody of Greek comedy, it tells the story of the slave Phormio’s noble battle to get Athens’ brothels re-opened in order to win his bride. It was a brilliant ensemble cast, all taking part with panache. There are some great characters, such as Cyrus, the ...

Snake in the Grass
Regent’s Park Thursday 26th November 7pm
Review by Charlotte Mulliner
This adaptation from a longer Alan Ayckbourn play pits two damaged sisters against each other in a twisted dialogue. Miriam, abused by her father and abandoned by her family subtly gets inside the mind of both the audience and her sister Annie, herself a once-beaten wife. Ruby Thomas, as Miriam, was beautifully effective. With a measured and disturbingly matter of fact tone she built up the ...

“Such a classy show, the stereotypes being portrayed extremely well” Sam Baker

A Real Summer
Review by Sam Baker
Merton 26th November 5.05pm
Not your standard Cupper’s entry, but perhaps another reason why I enjoyed this so much. More importantly, the acting and voicing of the characters was moreorless spot on throughout. Meg Barlett and Finola Austin, who directed themselves for this challenging piece, put on such a classy show, and portrayed the upper class stereotypes extremely well. Steven Poliakoff’s study of an emotionally unstable upper-crust of society was brought to life ever ...

“Very well done, particularly to the imaginative writers (this is not just lukewarm praise)” Sam Baker

Lukewarm
Review by Sam Baker
St Peter’s 26th November 4.20pm
This was a set of three plays written by three different people loosely held together by what seemed not very much more than the presence of a bathtub on stage, and directed by the same person. One was certainly made to feel very confused indeed. Perhaps this was the consensual intention of each of the three playwrights. The violent contrasts of mood between each of the ...

Pandemonium,
Magdalen, 26th November 2009, 12.30
Review by Uday Raj Anand

How do you take a simple idea, and do it well, in an honest, uncomplicated way? Ask the cast of Pandemonium. This performance takes a powerful excerpt from Milton’s Paradise Lost and dramatizes it. And does so successfully I would say-if success is measured by trueness to the script. An overall tight performance with spot-on technical execution ...
